My Monthly Read for October is the truly epic Lincoln In The Bardo by George Saunders. I haven’t read another book like this – it’s written almost like a play, narrated by a cacophony of monologuing, bickering ghosts in a graveyard (yes, really). It is incredibly compassionate and empathetic, and up there as one of my favourite books of all time.
At its heart, this is a story of one of the most famous men in history – President Abraham Lincoln – grieving for his dead son Willie, but it also foreshadows the hundreds of thousands of lives that are about to be lost in the American Civil War. Written by one of the greatest living writers, the last page still plays on repeat in my mind. It’s getting the chance to go deep on books like this and speak to authors like George Saunders about their craft that makes our Service95 Book Club so special.
