The Travel List: Gustra Adnyana On Where To Eat, Drink, Read, Stay & See Art In Ubud, Bali

In our My Hometown series, Gustra Adnyana – a Balinese creative director and the programme manager of Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, shares his insights into life as a creative in Ubud, discussing the particular magic of growing up in Bali, its artistic scene, extraordinary natural sights and ‘taksu’ – a spiritual force that gives it a presence unlike anywhere else. Here, he shares his must-visit spots to experience the best of island life...

The Ubud Cafes To Hang Out & Read In

Every day I like to start my morning with reading and breakfast at Littletalks Ubud. If I feel like being alone, I often visit Artteas tea house or the cozy Old Friends Coffee behind monkey forest. I also enjoy visiting Seniman Coffee and Plant Bistro. In the afternoon, there’s nothing like watching the sunset over the rice fields at Cafe Pomegranate or enjoying the view of the Ayung River valley from Sayan House.

Where To Eat & Drink In Ubud

I really like the speakeasy bar KAWI Ubud, which offers refreshing and original ingredient-focused highballs and cocktails. For a unique dining experience in a home garden setting, you can try Miro’s Garden Restaurant in Ubud. Casa Luna has been serving authentic Balinese cuisine and modern, nourishing dishes to discerning guests for over 30 years. For healthy, fresh food, consider visiting The Elephant, Dharmukula, or Kebun Bistro.

Where To Find The Best Traditional Food In Ubud

The legend since the 1940s is Warung Mek Juwel, a backyard home warung (restaurant/kiosk). Other notable spots include Warung Ning, Babi Guling Gung Cung for succulent pig, fresh fish street food at Warung Pak Cangkir, and the first restaurant in Ubud, Murni’s Warung.

Where To Stay In Ubud

If you go to Ubud, you should try staying with a Balinese family at Recep Bungalow or Honeymoon Guest House. If you enjoy yoga, try staying at The Yoga Barn. Experience the best views and beautiful atmosphere at Amandari, Alila Ubud, Chapung Sebali, and B.Saya Villa Ubud. Also consider staying at Shelter Island.

Where To See Art & Listen To Music In Ubud

The best exhibitions and curated galleries include Non Frasa Gallery, Sika Gallery, Purga Artspace which focuses on emerging artists, Bali dance performances at Ubud Royal Palace, and jazz music at Indus Restaurant while enjoying cocktails and the scenic Campuhan hill view. For curated music, visiting Chora Ubud is also enjoyable.
