My Monthly Read For April is the incredible Crying In H Mart by Michelle Zauner. The uber-cool lead vocalist and guitarist of cult American indie band Japanese Breakfast-turned-author writes with painful honesty about her challenging teenage relationship with her mother – and the grief that follows her mother’s death. Throughout the book, Zauner shares how the traditional Korean dishes her mother prepared with such love and skill connected her with the Korean half of her identity.
Everyone with an immigrant background – myself included – will relate to searching in a specialist shop for food that reminds you of home. A book about love and loss, it is as raw as it is precious. I cried my eyes out, but I also laughed and loved it. I can’t wait to hear what you think.
